A vintage reproduction of Le moyne de la mer ("The Sea Monk") from François Desprez's Recueil de la diversité des habits, published in Paris by Richard Breton in 1562 — often cited as the world's first costume book. Among portraits of Turks, Tartars, and Spaniards, Desprez slipped in a bipedal, piscine creature first spotted in the early 1500s — the sea monk, said to cosplay a Catholic priest and communicate with clergy. A Renaissance woodcut where ethnography blurs into folklore.

About the Illustrator: François Desprez was a French woodcut artist active in 16th-century Paris, working with publisher Richard Breton. Scholars believe he was also the artist behind The Drolatic Dreams of Pantagruel (1565), a series of grotesque hallucinations after Rabelais. His 121 woodcuts for the Recueil mix documentation and fantasy — fashion in the oldest sense of the word: a fabrication as well as a way of life.
