Between the 15th and 19th centuries, European naturalists illustrated the world's animals, plants, and unfamiliar creatures from secondhand sources — written descriptions, sailors' accounts, sketches passed between cities. The results were often wildly inaccurate, and often reproduced for centuries before anyone corrected them. This collection brings those illustrations back, one at a time.
